If You Don’t Have An Email List, You Are Missing Out

Have you ever signed up for a free guide, a webinar or a discount code?

I’m 99.9% sure you all said yes to that question. Am I wrong?

And yet while you are happy to give your email address to another company and get your free whatever, so few photographers actually have this set up on their own website.

Why You Need An Email List

Most Decisions Aren’t Spontaneous

Think about the last purchase you made online.

It doesn’t matter if it was a product or a service, did you hand over the cash the very first time you came in to contact with that business?

Or did you see it, get interested, see it a few times more, and then decide to make a purchase?

Few purchases are completely spontaneous. And the ones that are are often something that’s been on our mind for a while before we decided to finally pull the trigger.

It’s more likely that you saw a message from the same company at least 5 or 6 times before you decided to take the next step.

How you saw that message may have varied.

In the world of online advertising, it’s really easy to get your name in front of people who have shown an interest in your business (or one like yours). You only have to click on one Instagram advert out of curiosity and your feed will suddenly fill up with adverts for similar companies and products.

Which is great, but that all costs money. And many people won’t click on adverts simply because they are adverts.

But there is another way.

The best news is it WORKS. Oh, and the even better news is it’s FREE!

Your Audience Wants To Hear From You

We’ve already established that you’ve signed up for other people’s email lists before. How many times have you later gone back and purchased something from that business?

You might not purchase from all of the companies you are signed up to. But the ones that really made an impression. They are the ones you recommended to your friends or colleagues, and those are the ones you purchased from when they asked you to.

So many people don’t make use of this incredible marketing tool. They don’t understand how to make it work for their business.

But if you aren’t collecting email address on your website and signing people up for an email newsletter, you’re missing out.

Especially with the current global crisis, having an email list is one of the best ways to keep serving your audience, providing value to the people who want to receive it, and building up a loyal tribe.

I understand that things are challenging right now for almost any business that doesn’t sell hand sanitizer or face masks. Your audience is scared and feeling isolated, and they aren’t sure what the future holds. They might be ok with buying a $50 T-shirt that says “Social Distancing Since 1985” but they might be nervous about making any bigger financial commitments until this “glitch” blows over. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t planning for the future and doing their research now.

Why You Need To Have An Email List NOW

Imagine having a direct line of contact with the people in your audience who are genuinely interested in what you have to offer. Having a way to talk directly to the people who are interested in you without competing with the algorithms or paying for adverts.

How amazing does that sound?

That’s what an email list does!

When someone signs up for your email list, they are telling you that they are interested in what you offer. Just because they aren’t ready to hit “Book Now” today, it doesn’t mean they aren’t considering it.

When someone gives you their email address, they are giving you their contact details. They want to hear more! I really don’t feel like I can stress that enough – THEY ARE INTERESTED IN WHAT YOUR BUSINESS DOES!

Why fight to show up in their Instagram feed when you can get directly in to their inbox?

This Wouldn’t Work For Me

Having an email list works for ANY BUSINESS, as long as you know who your clients are, and what journey they are on.

If you collect email addresses, and only contact your list once every 6 months then you’re probably right, it won’t work. By then they will have forgotten about you, or their needs might have changed.

Building an email list is about delivering value to your audience, keeping them engaged with you, and guiding them on their journey until they are ready to make the commitment and to buy from you.
